Tikil Gomen Wat is not only a delicious way to enjoy cabbage but also a fantastic introduction to the vibrant and diverse world of Ethiopian cuisine.
Recipe Ethiopian Tikil Gomen Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 onion, chopped or sliced
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 1 tsp turmeric
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 small head of cabbage, finely chopped
- 4-5 carrot, diced or sliced
- 1 jalapeño to garnish
instructions:
1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat.
2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until it becomes translucent.
3. Add the minced garlic and ginger to the pot and cook for another minute.
4. Stir in the turmeric, and salt. Cook for a minute to toast the spices.
5. Add the diced carrots to the pot and stir to coat them with the spices.
6. Add the chopped cabbage, diced potatoes following the cabbage, and stir everything together.
7. Pour in a little bit of water if needed and bring the mixture to a simmer.
8. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it cook for about 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
9. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
10. Once the potatoes are cooked, remove the pot from the heat.
11. Serve the Tikel Gomen hot with injera (Ethiopian flatbread)
